What is Sandy Liang X Onitsuka Tiger?
My senior capstone aimed to create a bridge between femininity and functionality through the exploration of Sandy Liang’s design and Onitsuka Tiger’s shoe, the Mexico 66.
With this collaboration, Onitsuka Tiger would gain more traction within the US market. This time working with Sandy Liang to bring a fun and playful touch to a shoe originally set for athletic purposes. As the Mexico 66 has been historically known for its innovative sports design, the new focus is to drive the market for those looking for a lifestyle and everyday shoe.
The inspiration for this collaboration stems from the recent runway shows for Spring 24, specifically the collaboration between Crocs and Simone Rocha which brought to light a new unexpected design. The combination of a shoe that many people may or may not like with this high-end designer changes the audience's perspective. With the Onitsuka Tiger and Sandy Liang collaboration, there is a hope to take a new approach to the level of feminine touch we can add to sneakers.
